Smugmug Photo Sharing
Smugmug Photo Sharing is an online service where you can host/share your photos in a professional looking and highly customizable interface.
Smugmug was originally created for professional photographers to showcase their work, but I can tell you that I am definitely not a professional photographer, and I use Smugmug for the last 2 years and I love it. I do however, take lots of photos and I have all my friends and family checking my smugmug site regularly.
Smugmug is a paid service that offers 3 types of accounts: Basic Package, Power Package (which is what I have), and Pro Package. Each level is progressively more advanced and offer more options, functionality, and capabilities.
So what's so great about Smugmug?
Well where do I start? Smugmug's whole purpose on this earth is to accommodate photo sharing and hosting, make it looks as nice as possible and as easy as possible to use. Here are some of my reasons for liking Smugmug:
Unlimited space, unlimited number of photos and videos hosting and sharing
Currently I host and share around 200gb of around 16,850 photos and videos on my Smugmug site.
50 diferent page/site themes to choose from
Smugmug themes offer many possibilities of page layout, colors, fonts, etc. I use the Carbonite theme on my Smugmug site, it's a kind of guardian black to gray with a fairly simple page layout. I like it because it is a slight variation from the Smugmug default theme which is black with bright lime/green accents. In my opinion the Carbonite makes the eye flow better on the page. The thumbnail/image on the right shows my main/intro page with the categories layout.
Very easy to upload photos and videos
Taking photos is great, and sharing photos is great, but if it is a pain in the butt to upload your photos online, at one point you are going to stop doing it. Uploading photos to my Smugmug photo hosting website is easier than easy. At the beginning I used to use a tool called "Send To Smugmug" which is one of the tools recommended by Smugmug, it was great and easy to use. But then Smugmug improved their in browser upload tool, and man did they do a good job. It is so freaking easy, just pick your photos, or a whole directory like I do, click "Upload", choose if you want to tool to skip duplicates or not, and watch the progress bars running across the screen.
Site speed and ease of use
The sad truth is that most of my friends and family are babbling morons, and a site has to be very simple for them to be able to use it. Although you can choose different themes, the basic functionality of smugmug for visitors is fairly simple and easy to use. Smugmug also compress the images and videos in a way that does not detract for the quality, but makes the photos and video clips load and play very fast.
