CrashPlan Online Backup

CrashPlan is a paid online backup service, with several plans to choose from and very accommodating.

Most backup services out there have limitations on how many gigabytes you can backup, or from how many computers. CrashPlan is the only one I know of that offers a very affordable plan called "CrashPlan+ Family Unlimited" were you can backup as many gigabytes and from as many computers as you like. They do have other plans ranging from $1.50 per month for for 10GB all the way up to $$$ for CrashPlan Pro geared toward companies. If you choose not to back up to the CrashPlan cloud, and backup only from one computer to another, and/or to an external drive, and/or to a friend's computer, the service is free...yes free.

I am using CrashPlan for over a year, I backup 3 of my computers totaling around 500 gigabytes. I have the CrashPlan client installed on each of these computers, it wakes up every few minutes (based on my configuration) and check for new files...nice and easy. I do recover files from CrashPlan back to my computer every once in a while and never had a problem.

One of the coolest features of CrashPlan, is that you can backup to the CrashPlan service, to another computer, and to a friend's computer. This covers the basics of backup which states that you should have at least 3 backups, with at least 2 formats (hard disc, cloud, CD ROM, etc), and with at least 2 locations. I backup my main files on one of my other computers, on an external drive, to the CrashPlan service, and to my work computer. Plus, you can backup drives other than your computer's hard drive...network drives, external drives, USB thumb drives, etc.

From the CrashPlan client, you can restore files from any computer you have CrashhPlan installed on, so if I want a file from computer A on computer B, I can get it trough CrashPlan.

Addvantage:

4. Free backup from computer to computer.
5. Free backup from computer to a Friend's computer.
6. Backup any drive (not only computer hard-drive)

Disadvantages:

1. Does no have web interface.
